Coral
The scientific name of Pillar coral is Dendrogyra cylindricus. This coral is a member to the Animalia Kingdom, and the phylum Cnidaria(Colenterata). Pillar coral is a hard coral in the shape of a pillar. The coral is digitate coral meaning its strong skeleton is in the shape of fingers. The skeleton is usually not visible because Polyps, a body form that occurs in Cnidaria, attach on to it. The Coral is one of the few corals where Polyps can be seen. The skeletan is formed by calcium being secreted. If the Pillar is knocked over and into a suitable position the coral will keep on living by growing a new skeleton that is right side up.
